Thomas Becket Catholic School

Thomas Becket Catholic School

“Learning together, achieving together and building foundations in Christ”

At Thomas Becket Catholic School RE plays a central role in developing “religiously literate young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills - appropriate to their age and capacity - to think spiritually, ethically and theologically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life.” [Religious Education Curriculum Directory for Catholic Schools, Catholic Bishop’s conference of England & Wales, December 1996, p. 10.]

Learning together: RE teachers provide a stimulating curriculum, within a purposeful environment, that enriches the learning of the student. Our students are encouraged to be confident and resilient learners to rise to the challenges they will encounter, within the school, the community and beyond. Supporting learners to self-regulate - providing them with timely feedback and helping them to plan, monitor and evaluate their progress - forms the basis for successful, independent learning.

Achieving together: We aim to instil a sense of aspiration in the student through positive attitudes and high expectations. Students can expect high focus on developing religious literacy and a consistent approach to excellence progress for all. We create opportunities for students who do not master learning objectives to repeat work before moving on.

Building foundations: The RE Department work in harmony with the school Chaplain to promote values, virtues and ethos that shape our students' character and moral perspective, through the teachings of the Catholic Church. We are confident that our continued focus on the Gospel values which is found rooted in the Beatitudes gives students the necessary awareness of what it means to be a good citizen in Britain today and embed in them the building blocks of a future successful and productive life.

In Christ: The RE Department place the values that Christ taught us at the heart of all that we do. This means integrating Gospel values given by Christ himself and the teachings of the Catholic Church into every aspect of learning, teaching and the totality of school life.

Some of the children in Thomas Becket Catholic school are practicing members of other faiths and our school aims to provide a nurturing environment for spiritual development of all students regardless of their faith. It is an act of respect and compassion that our curriculum helps them to develop their own spiritual growth and reflect on the nature of their own religious identity. As the Church says, “All children and young people including those of other faiths in our Catholic schools must have the same possibilities for arriving at the knowledge of their own religion as well as of elements that characterise other religions.” (Congregation for Catholic Education).
