St Thomas Becket Catholic School

Physical Education Department

At our St Thomas Becket Catholic School, the Physical Education curriculum is built on the belief that sport and physical activity should be accessible, inclusive, and enjoyable for all students. Our mission is to inspire lifelong participation in sport by offering a dynamic and diverse curriculum that evolves with current sporting trends and introduces students to emerging activities.

In Key Stage 3, students follow a structured programme that develops core skills, tactical understanding, and teamwork through a wide range of sports.

Lessons are delivered using a model called:

  • Learn
  • Perform
  • Compete

This is done to ensure progression from foundational techniques to competitive gameplay. All students, regardless of gender or ability, are given equal opportunities to participate and succeed.

The current KS3 sports include: Athletics, Badminton, Fitness, Football, Games, Handball, Netball, Table Tennis, Touch Tennis, Touch Rugby, and Striking & Fielding.

In Key Stage 4, the focus shifts to promoting independence and long-term engagement in sport. Students choose their preferred activities each term and take on leadership roles, learning how to organise and deliver practical sessions. This approach helps them explore different pathways in sport, such as player, coach, official, and organiser, preparing them to stay active and involved beyond their school years.

In addition to curriculum lessons, students are encouraged to take part in a vibrant extra-curricular programme, which includes weekly training sessions and competitive fixtures across a variety of sports. We also run inter-house competitions throughout the year to promote school spirit, teamwork, and friendly competition. We have an Instagram account where parents and students can keep up to date with all that is happening in the PE department, which you can follow: @thomasbecket.peandsport

Our curriculum not only supports physical development but also nurtures confidence, communication, and collaboration, equipping students with valuable life skills through sport.
