The House System at St Thomas Becket Catholic School
At St Thomas Becket Catholic School, our House System sits at the very heart of school life. It plays a vital role in building a strong sense of belonging, encouraging positive relationships, and giving every student a place where they are known, supported and celebrated.
The House System brings together students from all year groups, providing opportunities for leadership, collaboration, competition and service. It is one of the key ways we live out our Catholic values in daily school life.
Every member of our school community is attached to a saint; an inspirational figure who models characteristics and virtues for us to follow. These are highlighted through prayers, Celebrations of the Word and feast days. Each saint has a Saint Captain, who collectively form our extended Student Leadership Team. Each saint feast day is marked and celebrated by its members, as well as friendly competitions between saint houses throughout the year. In the final week of the summer term the winner of the Saints Cup is revealed with a celebration on the field.
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Our House System helps us to do exactly that — together.
Why we have a House system
Our House System exists to:
- Build belonging and identity for every student
- Encourage positive behaviour, effort and character
- Provide opportunities for student leadership and student voice
- Promote healthy competition and teamwork
- Strengthen relationships across year groups
- Celebrate achievement in its many forms
Every student and member of staff belongs to a House, and House identity is a visible and celebrated part of our school culture.
House Leadership
Each House is led by a Head of House, supported by a team of staff and students. Student leadership within the House System includes:
- House Captains
- Vice House Captains
- Student Leaders and Prefects
These students play an important role in representing their House, organising events, gathering student voice and helping to shape the culture of the school.
The House System also links closely with the Junior Leadership Team (JLT), ensuring students have meaningful opportunities to influence school life.
House Points & Rewards
Students can earn House Points throughout the year for:
- Positive behaviour and attitudes
- Effort and resilience
- Contribution to school life
- Representing the school
- Living out our school values
House Points are carefully tracked and contribute towards the annual House Cup, which is awarded at the end of the academic year.
Alongside the House Cup, Houses are celebrated regularly through assemblies, displays and whole-school events.
House Events & Competitions
The House System provides a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved, including:
- Sporting competitions
- Music and performing arts events
- Academic and creative challenges
- Charity and fundraising activities
- House assemblies and celebrations
These events encourage teamwork, confidence and participation, and ensure there is something for every student, whatever their interests or strengths.
Building Belonging
Above all, the House System is about belonging.
It ensures every student:
- Feels known and valued
- Has trusted adults and peers to support them
- Has opportunities to lead and contribute
- Feels proud to be part of the wider St Thomas Becket community
Through our House System, we aim to create a school where students feel connected, confident and inspired to give their best.
