Physical Education

Promoting a healthy, active lifestyle

The aim of our Physical Education department is to:

  •  Build a life-long desire, knowledge and the skills to lead healthy and active lives.
  •  Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  •  Ensure that our students are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  •  Engage in competitive sports and activities through our curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
  •  Instil the school’s Catholic core values within sport through faith, justice, compassion, truth and respect.

Year 7 Core PE

​​​​​​​Sports to be completed (skills focus): Skills testing/fitness testing, health & fitness, rugby, football, netball, dance, gymnastics, basketball, hockey, OAA, athletics, striking & fielding and tennis.

Healthy, active lifestyle

Term 1 & 2 - Principles of Training/Smoking, drugs & alcohol:

Fitness tests, methods + principles of training, components of fitness and heart rate. Short-term effects of smoking.

Term 3 & 4 - Anatomy and Physiology:

Musculoskeletal system, cardiorespiratory system—the basics. Short-term effects of drugs.

Term 5 & 6 - Leadership

Run effective warm up in small groups. Short-term effects of alcohol

Year 8 Core PE

Sports to be completed (skills focus): Fitness testing, health & fitness, rugby, football, netball, hockey, OAA alternative sports, badminton, dance, athletics, striking & fielding and tennis.

Healthy, active lifestyle

Term 1 & 2 - Nutrition, Hydration and long-term effects of smoking:

Recap Year 7, begin nutrition (diet and hydration). Long term effects of smoking.

Term 3 & 4 - Anatomy and Physiology:

Recap Year 7, begin short and long-term effects of exercise on body systems. Long term effects of drugs.

Term 5 & 6 - Leadership

Lead a small activity as a pair. Long-term effects of alcohol.

Year 9 Core PE

Year 9 Core PE

Sports to be completed (skills focus): Fitness testing, health & fitness, rugby, football, hockey, netball, badminton, alternative sports, basketball, dance, athletics, striking & fielding and tennis.

Healthy, active lifestyle

Term 1 & 2 - Principles of Training:

Recap Year 7 & 8, introduce psychology in sport. Effects of smoking on sports participation.

Term 3 & 4 - Anatomy and Physiology:

Recap Year 7 & 8, introduce sports injuries and rehabilitation. Effects of drugs in sports participation.

Term 5 & 6 - Leadership

Leading an activity independently.  Alcohol & peer pressure

Year 10 Core & BTEC

Year 10 Core PE

Sports to be completed (tactics & evaluation focus to develop from KS3 curriculum): Fitness testing, health & fitness, invasion games, net/wall games, striking & fielding, athletics, OAA and fitness/alternative sports

 Healthy, active lifestyle

Term 1 & 2 - Principles of Training:

Recap Year 7, 8 & 9. Develop fitness tests, methods & principles of training

Term 3 & 4 - Nutrition & Psychology:

Recap Year 7, 8 & 9. Develop nutrition and sports psychology -

Term 5 & 6 - Leadership:

Teach an entire lesson. Evaluate teacher feedback.

L2 BTEC in Sport theory lessons

Unit 2 - Anatomy and Physiology:

Exam - begin Sept (Y10) - May (Y10)

Unit 1 - Principles of Training:

Coursework - begin after exam in the summer of Year 10

Year 11 Core & BTEC

Year 11 Core PE

Sporting to be completed (sports for leisure/stress buster focus): Invasion games, net/wall games and fitness/ alternative sports & athletics.

Healthy, active lifestyle

Students will be taught the science behind how this works to not only relive stress but increase performance with their studies and work in later life. They can then use this knowledge for the rest of their lives.

L2 BTEC in Sport theory lessons

Unit 1 - Principles of Training:

Coursework - finish from Sept (Y11) - December (Y11)

Unit 3 - Leadership:

Coursework and practical - begin January (Y11) - exam leave.

Unit 2 - Anatomy and Physiology Re-Sit:

Potential re-sits for Unit 2 exam in January (Year 11).
